Parenting Advice: Do Not Force Young Children to Say Sorry
German parenting experts advise that pressuring a young child to apologize is counter‑productive. Because children’s empathy is still developing, they often act impulsively and may not understand the impact of their actions. Rather than demanding the word “sorry,” parents should help the child recognize the other child’s feelings, for example by asking, “How would you feel if this happened to you?” and by suggesting ways to make amends, such as rebuilding a sandcastle.
The guidance also stresses the importance of role‑modeling: parents who openly acknowledge others’ feelings and apologize themselves provide the best example. Giving the child time, praising genuine attempts at repair, and using gentle prompts encourage authentic empathy and responsibility without turning the apology into a rote formula.
