Neural Processing Units (NPUs) are being integrated into the processors of new Windows‑based PCs and laptops in Germany. The NPU acts as a dedicated AI accelerator, handling matrix multiplications and additions with reduced precision (4‑8 bit) to run local AI models efficiently while consuming far less power than a CPU or GPU would. Devices that meet Microsoft’s Copilot+ criteria can display the label, signalling built‑in AI productivity features.

Industry experts such as Christian Hirsch of the IT magazine c't and Jörg Geiger of Chip explain that NPUs are not separate chips but added pathways within the CPU, designed to speed up AI tasks and lower energy use. The debate centres on whether the added cost of NPU‑enabled hardware is justified for consumers, given that many AI functions can still run on existing CPU/GPU resources albeit with higher energy demand.
