German peace groups criticize military exercises and rising defense spending

Peace organizations in Germany are criticizing increasing military spending and civil-military cooperation. The IPPNW (International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War) has raised concerns regarding the NATO exercise ‘Red Storm Charlie’ scheduled for late September in Hamburg. The exercise, which simulates a conflict scenario involving Russia, includes plans for medical personnel and transport helicopters from the Bundeswehr to move casualties from the airport to the Hamburg University Medical Center.

The IPPNW warns that integrating medical staff into military structures creates role conflicts, as medical ethics may clash with military logic during resource shortages. Dr. Angelika Claußen, chair of the IPPNW, stated that such exercises increase the risk of escalation and undermine disarmament efforts.

Additionally, the ‘Kooperation für den Frieden’, a coalition of over 50 peace organizations, has criticized the doubling of German military spending over the last five years. Spokespeople argue that these funds are being diverted from essential public services such as healthcare, education, and environmental protection. The coalition is calling for a return to diplomacy to break the cycle of escalation between Russia and the West.
