German pension credits for child-rearing require manual application

In Germany, parents who reduce their working hours to care for children can receive pension credits, but the Deutsche Rentenversicherung (DRV) emphasizes that these credits must be applied for manually and are not automatically credited.

Under the upcoming Mütterrente III reforms, the current distinction between children based on their birth year will be abolished. Instead, child-rearing credits will be standardized to a maximum of three years. Due to technical transitions within the DRV, actual payouts for these credits are scheduled to begin in 2028, though accumulated claims will be paid retroactively in a single lump sum.

Additionally, individuals may choose to purchase pension points to increase their future retirement income. To qualify for this option, individuals must be at least 50 years old, have existing contributions to the DRV, and be on track to reach at least 35 years of insurance by the time they retire.
