German pension reform debate sparks clash on ZDF podcast
Philosopher Richard David Precht and TV host Markus Lanz argued on the ZDF podcast “Lanz + Precht” about the proposals of the German Rentenkommission. Precht criticised the plan as a “bankruptcy declaration” for the pension system, saying it fails to solve the structural problem that in the next 10‑15 years two workers will have to finance one retiree. He noted the system already receives over €100 billion in subsidies from the federal budget, which will keep rising, and dismissed the suggestion that young people will only benefit if they own an apartment bought by their parents. Lanz called Precht’s tone apocalyptic and defended the reforms, citing young politicians such as Pascal Reddig, Johannes Winkel and Philipp Türmer.
