German pig farmers face crisis as prices stay low

Pig prices in Germany have remained at a low, stable level of €1.4 per kilogram of carcass weight, with piglet prices unchanged at €30 each, according to the producers' association VEZG. A modest rise to €1.47 kg was recorded at the July 28 online pig auction, but the price still fails to cover production costs.

Farmers report persistent losses, with average earnings of €21.05 per fattening pig turning negative in the 30th calendar week, threatening the viability of many holdings. The situation is compounded by high operating costs, regulatory pressures and limited market liquidity. Industry voices, including Dr. Robert Elmerhaus of Tönnies, note that the quiet meat market offers no clear stimulus for a price rebound.

Agricultural unions such as the Landesbauernverband Baden‑Württemberg and the Badische Landwirtschaftliche Hauptverband have called for immediate political and trade support, warning that without swift liquidity aid and stable market conditions, further farm closures could jeopardise regional food supply and rural economies.
