German police expand A1 video surveillance to curb accidents

German motorway police are expanding video surveillance on the A1 near Wildeshausen, Lower Saxony, following a high frequency of serious and fatal accidents. The measure is a response to ongoing traffic congestion and safety risks caused by major construction work at the Weser Bridge, which is expected to continue well into next year.

Authorities have introduced a VKS measurement system to better document violations related to driver distraction and improper following distances. The system utilizes specific measurement points on the roadway to ensure accurate and legally binding data collection. Police noted that human error, specifically inattention and inappropriate driving behavior, remains the primary cause of accidents in the area.
