German police face shortage as young officers report low job satisfaction

A nationwide study by the Chemnitz University of Technology reveals significant dissatisfaction among young police officers in Germany. The research, which surveyed 8,219 officers up to the age of 29, indicates that many are considering leaving the profession, terminating their training, or switching careers.

On a satisfaction scale of one to seven, general job satisfaction averaged 4.39. However, specific areas scored significantly lower. Officers reported particularly low levels of satisfaction regarding the recognition of their work (3.34), promotion and further training opportunities (3.38), and working hours (3.52).

Additional concerns were raised regarding income (3.75), internal information flow, and opportunities for participation in decision-making (3.65). Qualitative feedback suggested that some supervisors block new ideas and that communication within the force requires improvement. The study highlights that a lack of opportunities for co-determination may hinder organizational development.
