Germany and Austria investigate contaminated Halloween sweets

Police in Germany and Austria have launched widespread investigations following reports of metal objects, including needles, nails, and screws, being found in Halloween sweets collected by children.

In Germany, incidents have been reported across numerous federal states, including Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Thuringia, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, and North Rhine-Westphalia. Authorities are investigating several cases as suspected attempted dangerous bodily harm. Notable injuries include a nine-year-old girl in Bremervörde who sustained a tongue injury from a five-centimeter needle in a chocolate bar, and a child in Neustadt-Glewe who suffered minor mouth injuries. In one instance in Appenheim, police determined that small magnets found in a candy were an accidental manufacturing error rather than deliberate tampering.

In Austria, the Federal Criminal Police Office is coordinating investigations into similar findings in Upper Austria, Styria, and Lower Austria. Reports include children finding needles in gummy candies and chocolate bars, as well as nails in sweets in the Linz area. While several children have encountered these objects, authorities have not yet confirmed a definitive link between all the individual cases across both countries.
