German police speed‑camera enforcement draws attention in Trier and Cologne

On 18 June 2026 the police in the Trier region (covering parts of Germany, Luxembourg and Saarland) posted a daily list of speed‑camera sites, including locations such as B51 in Newel, Ehrang, and several points in Luxembourg and the Saarland. The announcement also detailed the fine and penalty point schedule for speed‑limit breaches both inside and outside built‑up areas.

A separate incident on Cologne’s Zoobrücke attracted media coverage when RTL moderator Angela Finger‑Erben observed a police patrol car being photographed by a speed camera. Police explained that the camera system can assign the measured speed to the correct vehicle, and that officers are permitted to exceed normal limits when driving on official duty after notifying their control centre. The city confirmed that the camera on the Zoobrücke accurately identifies the offending vehicle, meaning the officer would not be automatically fined.
