Germany sees spate of serious cyclist accidents, several drivers flee

In recent days German police have recorded multiple serious traffic incidents involving cyclists. In Thüngersheim, an 80‑year‑old cyclist was lightly injured after a car overtook him too closely, prompting police to remind drivers of the mandatory 1.5‑metre inner‑city and 2‑metre outer‑city passing distances. In Ratingen, a 65‑year‑old cyclist suffered severe injuries when a BMW driver harassed, overtook and braked sharply in front of him; the driver fled the scene but was identified soon after, had his licence seized and was barred from driving.

A 52‑year‑old female cyclist was heavily injured in a collision with a car at a roundabout in Weil am Rhein, while a ten‑year‑old boy in Marktheidenfeld was seriously hurt after being struck by a car driven by an 83‑year‑old man. Both victims required hospital treatment. In Hemer, police are searching for the driver who damaged a parked Renault and fled, causing several hundred euros of damage.

Authorities have opened investigations for each case, confiscated licences where applicable, and continue to urge road users to respect safety distances to prevent further injuries.
