German politicians call for strengthening National Security Council
One year after its establishment, politicians from the CDU and the Green Party are calling for a significant strengthening of Germany's National Security Council.
CDU foreign policy expert Roderich Kiesewetter criticized the council as a 'paper tiger,' arguing it remains ineffective due to a lack of political will within the federal government. He suggested the council should evolve into a permanent, independent body and proposed the appointment of a National Security Advisor.
Green Party security expert Konstantin von Notz echoed these sentiments, noting that the council's weaknesses were exposed following a drone discovery at Leipzig/Halle Airport. He recommended that a dedicated individual be appointed to coordinate the council's various actors, rather than relying on personnel with existing heavy workloads.
Marc Henrichmann, chairman of the intelligence oversight committee, also supported the upgrading of the council and the potential for a security advisor. However, he noted that such developments must include discussions regarding parliamentary and legal oversight.
