Germany faces social tension and political shifts amid low trust

Germany faces significant political and social challenges, according to recent studies and official statements. A Bertelsmann Stiftung report, the 'Religionsmonitor 2026', indicates that while social cohesion has seen a slight improvement—rising from 46 points in 2023 to 51 points—public trust in the federal government remains low at 37 points. Notably, the sense of justice among citizens has dropped to its lowest level since 2017, scoring only 25 points.

In response to these tensions, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned against 'vulgar democrats' and those who seek to undermine the rule of law by claiming an exclusive mandate from an 'alleged will of the people.'

Political shifts are also evident within major parties. The SPD is facing an erosion of support, with polling showing values between 12 and 14 percent. Meanwhile, within the CDU, there are calls for structural reforms to regain status as a 'people's party' (Volkspartei). Additionally, Johannes Winkel of the Junge Union has proposed welfare reforms that would differentiate social benefits based on prior contributions to the system, a move that would disproportionately affect migrants.
