German politicians reflect on the role of religion in leadership
German political leaders Hendrik Wüst and Winfried Kretschmann have shared reflections on the role of religion and faith in their lives and political work.
North Rhine-Westphalia Minister President Hendrik Wüst discussed his upbringing in the Catholic faith and how it provides him with a moral framework and orientation. He noted that his connection to faith deepened following the death of his mother. Wüst expressed a desire to pass these Christian values on to his children, noting that prayer remains a regular part of his family life.
Former Baden-Württemberg Minister President Winfried Kretschmann reflected on the importance of religion in politics and the role of conscience. Having served as a church affairs representative, Kretschmann discussed the necessity of maintaining connections with established churches to provide stability and perspective in turbulent times. He emphasized that the role of a church representative is to advocate for religious diversity within the framework of constitutional freedom of religion and belief.
