German politicians see divergent social media reach

An analysis of social media performance among German federal politicians reveals that the AfD and Die Linke are significantly overrepresented on platforms like TikTok and Instagram relative to their actual voter base. Since the summer break, these two parties have accounted for more than half of all views on TikTok, despite representing only about one-third of the votes in the last federal election.

Experts suggest this high engagement is driven by frequent posting and a strategy of aggressive attacks against political opponents, which social media algorithms tend to reward. Political scientist Andreas Blätte notes that politicians are increasingly performing for the camera rather than for parliamentary factions, using provocations and scandals to generate viral content.

This shift toward social media logic is reportedly impacting the culture of the Bundestag. The traditional focus on respectful debate and discourse is being replaced by a trend of using pre-fabricated punchlines and manufactured outbursts to maximize digital reach.
