German poultry slaughterhouse investigation faces potential dismissal

Prosecutors in Ansbach have indicated that legal proceedings against the managing directors of a major poultry slaughterhouse in Mittelfranken, Germany, may be dropped in exchange for a low four-digit fine. The investigation was triggered in April 2025 by video footage released by the animal rights organization Aninova, which appeared to show employees mistreating chickens.

A technical expert report suggested that a malfunction in the slaughtering equipment caused the improper decapitation of some birds. The prosecution stated that the directors' responsibility falls on the borderline between intent and negligence, noting that the incidents were not widespread and actual knowledge of the issue was difficult to prove.

Factors influencing the potential dismissal include the fact that the facility in Wassertrüdingen has been shut down and that the directors assisted in identifying the employees involved. While the case against the directors may be settled via fine, seven employees have faced penal orders with fines ranging from 30 to 180 daily rates, six of which are already legally binding.
