German primary schools face space shortages due to rising enrollment

Primary schools in parts of Germany are experiencing acute space shortages driven by rising enrollment numbers, including a significant cohort of students born during the pandemic era.

In the Hennenbach district, the local administration has had to deploy a container to accommodate all registered first-grade students for the 2026/27 school year. While rising enrollment numbers are noted, they signal potential long-term capacity issues for the city of Ansbach.

In Babenhausen, a proposed 22-million-euro project aims to address both space shortages and aging infrastructure. The plan involves a combination of renovating the existing building and constructing a new wing to house approximately half of the student body. The current facility faces challenges regarding accessibility, energy efficiency, and outdated architectural design. However, the scale and scope of the proposed renovation and expansion have met with some opposition during planning sessions.
