Istanbul authorities investigate death of German prosecutor
Turkish authorities have launched an investigation into the death of Sibel Tunç, a 42-year-old German prosecutor from Hamburg, who died while on vacation in Istanbul.
Tunç and her husband were staying in the Silivri district, west of Istanbul, when she began suffering from severe nausea and vomiting. After approximately four days of illness, she sought emergency medical care on September 13. Reports indicate her condition deteriorated rapidly while waiting for treatment in the emergency room, and she passed away shortly after being moved to intensive care.
Because a physician classified the death as suspicious, police have initiated an inquiry to determine the exact cause of death. An autopsy was performed at the Institute of Forensic Medicine. While the specific cause remains unconfirmed, officials are investigating all possibilities, including potential poisoning or infection. The case has drawn comparisons to a 2025 incident in which a Hamburg family died in Istanbul following pesticide poisoning.
