German Prosecutors Accuse Ukraine of Ordering Nord Stream Sabotage

German prosecutors have indicted an ex‑Ukrainian officer, alleging that Ukrainian authorities ordered the September 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines near Denmark's Bornholm island. The suspect is charged with a war crime for planning an attack on civilian infrastructure, using explosives that caused explosions and damage to public installations.

The accused was arrested in Italy in August 2025 and extradited to Germany. Russia’s Kremlin says the indictment shows Ukrainian involvement in a terrorist act and urges EU members to consider the case in discussions on Ukraine’s accession. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv lacks sufficient evidence to respond in detail. Before the invasion, Nord Stream 1 supplied roughly half of Germany’s annual natural‑gas needs.
