German Prosecutors Seek Life Sentence for Magdeburg Christmas Market Attacker

German prosecutors have asked a court to impose a life‑long imprisonment on Taleb al‑Abdulmohsen, a Saudi‑born former psychiatrist, for the deadly vehicle attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market on 20 December 2024. The driver steered a high‑speed BMW through a gap in the market’s barriers, killing six people and injuring more than 300, many of whom continue to suffer physical and psychological trauma.

The Generalstaatsanwaltschaft argues the assault was pre‑planned and motivated by a personal grievance after the accused lost a civil case against a Cologne refugee‑aid organisation. A psychiatric evaluation diagnosed him with a narcissistic personality disorder and an extreme need for attention. The trial, now in its 35th session, is being held under heightened security with a temporary lightweight court building erected to accommodate the large number of plaintiffs and witnesses. The prosecution is also seeking charges of multiple counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Victims, including children and seniors from across Germany and abroad, report ongoing anxiety, panic attacks and sleep disturbances. The case has reignited public debate over security at Germany’s traditional holiday markets.
