German public backs nationwide uniform education system, HR survey shows

A Hessischer Rundfunk (HR) opinion barometer called HR FRAGT surveyed 4,556 residents of Hessen between 22 and 30 July. Sixty‑five percent of participants supported a nationwide uniform education system, a level of agreement rarely seen in past polls. Support was higher among respondents over 50 years old (67 %) than among those under 50 years (57 %).

The survey identified the biggest challenges for the Hessian school system as a shortage of teachers and insufficient financial resources, each cited by roughly half of those surveyed. Other concerns included fair education opportunities (34 %), differing state school systems (29 %) and integration (25 %). When asked which subjects should receive more emphasis in curricula, 63 % prioritized media competence, 56 % wanted more focus on politics and society, followed by finance and taxes (49 %) and career‑ and life‑planning (35 %).

HR FRAGT, the HR opinion panel, invites any Hessen resident aged 16 or older to register online for regular surveys on societal and political topics, aiming to strengthen public dialogue and reflect diverse perspectives in programming.
