German public broadcasters face scrutiny over oversight and transparency

To address concerns regarding neutrality and mandate fulfillment, German federal states have established the 'Medienrat,' an expert body intended to evaluate public broadcasting. However, the appointment of Beatrice Sauerbrey as the managing director of this council has drawn scrutiny. Sauerbrey, a media scientist with long-standing ties to the Green Party in Thuringia, has been criticized by opponents who question whether a politically connected individual can provide truly independent oversight of the broadcasters.
