German Survey Shows Majority Expect Early End of Current Government
A poll conducted by the opinion‑research institute Insa for the newspaper Bild am Sonntag surveyed 1,002 German adults on 30‑31 July 2026. The results show that 57 % of respondents expect the current coalition government to collapse before the scheduled end of the legislative period in 2029, while only 29 % believe it will last the full term. Trust in the government's ability to pass major reforms this year is low: just 25 % think important reforms can be enacted, compared with 65 % who doubt it.
The survey also identified the policy areas the public sees as most urgent: pensions (64 %), the economy (63 %) and health care (62 %). Internal security (54 %) and migration (53 %) rank next. The findings reflect a broader loss of confidence in the Schwarz‑Red coalition led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, whose recent cabinet reshuffle has not improved public sentiment.
