German Public Struggles to Recognize New Ministers in Merz Cabinet

A street survey conducted by the Münchner Merkur in Munich asked passersby to identify members of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s newly formed cabinet. While the Chancellor himself was recognized by all respondents, the two new ministers – Carsten Linnemann (Transport) and Steffen Bilger (Health) – were largely unknown. Many participants could not name other cabinet members such as Vice‑Chancellor Lars Klingbeil, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, or former CDU leader Armin Laschet.

The Merz cabinet comprises 16 ministers, with nine from the CDU/CSU bloc and seven from the SPD. The survey highlights a gap between the government’s recent reshuffle and public awareness of the individuals now holding key portfolios.
