German rail expansion projects face delays and funding concerns
Major railway infrastructure projects in Germany are facing logistical and financial challenges. In Schleswig-Holstein, Transport Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen has guaranteed that regional trains will continue to run between Elmshorn and Hamburg, despite plans to extend the S-Bahn service on the heavily used route. The proposed four-track expansion of the 15-kilometer section between Elmshorn and Pinneberg is estimated to cost approximately one billion euros.
Separately, the expansion of the Angermünde-Stettin line has been delayed until 2028. Deutsche Bahn subsidiary InfraGo reported that the delay is due to a lack of capacity and unavailable technology, specifically regarding control and security systems. While the first construction phase to Passow is complete, the second phase toward the Polish border is stalled by supply bottlenecks in current technical resources required to maintain compatibility with existing interlocking systems.
