German railway stations undergo accessibility and modernization upgrades

Infrastructure projects in Germany are focusing on improving railway accessibility and station facilities. In Karlsruhe, the Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe (VBK) has begun a 500,000 euro project at the main station to increase platform heights. The initial phase involves installing prefabricated plates on tracks 22 and 23 to create a 34-centimeter height, facilitating easier access to trams. This temporary solution is expected to last until October 2, after which work on tracks 21 and 24 is planned for the winter.

In Reutlingen, the station's reception building and former express goods hall have reopened following an 8.4 million euro modernization. Funded largely by federal programs, the project aimed to enhance energy efficiency, accessibility, and passenger comfort. Upgrades include new flooring, automatic doors, improved lighting, and tactile guidance systems for the visually impaired. The station also features improved insulation and new heating and ventilation technology.
