German Red Cross blood drive inspires 10,000 donors after Metallica concert

The German Red Cross partnered with the rock band Metallica during the band’s May 2026 M72 World Tour concerts in Berlin and Frankfurt, urging fans to donate blood. The campaign, titled “Bleeding Me,” offered exclusive fan‑shirts to participants and attracted more than 10,000 donors in Germany, double the expected number. Including prior calls with the American Red Cross, the initiative has generated roughly 40,000 donations worldwide since 2025, aiming to convert newcomers into repeat donors amid a critical shortage of all blood groups.

In July, a 20‑year‑old university student, Mona Bollmann, made her first donation at a special event for first‑time donors in Konstanz’s Bodenseeforum. After completing the health questionnaire and a brief health check that flagged a low iron level, she successfully gave blood despite an initial vein difficulty. Her experience illustrates the personal side of the nationwide push to address the blood supply gap and encourages other young people to join the donor pool.
