German Red Cross clothing depots face volunteer shortages
The German Red Cross (DRK) is facing urgent volunteer shortages across its 35 clothing depots in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A spokesperson noted that recruiting and retaining long-term volunteers has become increasingly difficult, partly because many current helpers are reaching an older age.
Operational challenges include opening hours that conflict with standard working schedules, making it difficult for professionals to assist. The organization also reported issues with the quality of donations, stating that a significant amount of clothing is soiled, damaged, or unwearable. The DRK has appealed to the public to avoid using clothing containers for disposing of unsuitable items, as this increases disposal costs and consumes staff time.
In the region, the Caritasverband provides alternatives through its free shop in Anklam and the 'Cari-Kinderkleiderschrank' in Greifswald.
