German Red Cross removes clothing containers in Lauchhammer

The German Red Cross (DRK) has removed its old clothing containers from Lauchhammer due to increasing misuse. Local authorities reported that collection points were frequently being used as illegal dumping sites for household and bulky waste, rather than just textiles.

The DRK cited rising disposal costs and a decline in the quality of donated items, noting that much of the clothing provided was heavily soiled or unusable. This decision follows a similar move by the neighboring town of Schwarzheide.

Broader issues regarding textile waste are being exacerbated by a new EU directive effective January 2025, which mandates the separate collection of all textiles. This has led to an influx of items in containers, including damaged or heavily soiled clothing that is unsuitable for resale. Experts note that while all textiles must be collected separately, broken or heavily soiled items should still be disposed of in residual waste to prevent the contamination of donation bins.
