German red wine poised for high quality following early harvest
Germany is experiencing an exceptionally early wine harvest, with the German Wine Institute (DWI) noting that the start of the harvest is among the earliest ever recorded. The unusually hot and dry summer conditions are expected to significantly benefit the production of red wines.
Experts suggest that red wine varieties, such as Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, may be the winners of this vintage. The intense sunlight and heat have produced small, highly ripe, and healthy grapes with thick skins. These characteristics are expected to result in wines with high aromatic intensity and deep color due to increased tannins.
While the outlook for red wines is positive, the harvest progress varies across different wine-growing regions. The degree of ripeness is heavily influenced by local water supply and soil conditions, as drought can slow development in certain areas. While many grapes are already ready for picking, other vineyards require more time depending on their specific location and water availability.
