German regional agricultural initiatives undergo structural shifts

Regional agricultural initiatives in Germany are undergoing structural changes. In the Kelheim district, the Eco-Model Region is calling for funding applications for small-scale organic projects for 2027. Part of the BioRegio 2030 initiative, these grants aim to strengthen organic farming and regional value chains by connecting producers, processors, and consumers. Eligible projects must have a net investment of up to 20,000 euros, with subsidies covering up to 50 percent of costs.

In Baden-Württemberg, the Ortenau district has decided to end its membership in the Bio-Musterregion Mittelbaden+ at the conclusion of the current funding period on August 31, 2027. The decision follows changes to state funding conditions, which would require participating municipalities to commit to specific targets, such as ensuring at least 40 percent organic food in communal catering by 2030. The district intends to continue supporting regional agriculture and local market opportunities through other means, regardless of whether farms use organic or conventional methods.
