German Regional Art Prizes Shift to Biennial Schedule

The Brandenburg state art prize will now be awarded every two years, with the next ceremony planned for 2026 at the Landesmuseum für moderne Kunst in Cottbus. Culture Minister Manja Schüle said the change aims to strengthen artistic positions rather than individual works. Three category awards of €10,000 each will go to Maren Strack, Peter Rohn and Gabriele Konsor, while a lifetime‑achievement prize of €15,000 honors artist Christa Jeitner. A digital application platform allows artists born, residing or working in Brandenburg to apply.

In the neighbouring district of Haßberge, the Kunstpreis 2027 also follows a biennial rhythm, offering a €2,000 prize to professional visual artists from the Mainfranken region and the Nürnberg metropolitan area. Winners are selected by a multi‑member jury, and the awarded works will be displayed for four weeks at Schloss Oberschwappach. Additional special and audience prizes of €500 each are funded by local businesses.
