German regional festivals celebrate orchard meadow heritage
Various regional festivals in Germany are celebrating the cultural and ecological significance of orchard meadows (Streuobstwiesen).
In Dörrensolz, the Landschaftspflegeverband Thüringer Rhön e. V. and the Natura 2000-Station Rhön will host a jubilee orchard festival on September 27, 2026. The event marks the 35th anniversary of the landscape conservation association and the 10th anniversary of the Natura 2000 stations in Thuringia. Activities include apple variety identification, insights into local wildlife, and educational stations for children.
In Maintal, the Arbeitskreis Streuobst is organizing a traditional orchard meadow festival in Hochstadt on August 30. The event features information on local biodiversity, including insects and bees, alongside tastings of products like apple cider and vinegar. Educational offerings include guided tours by biologist Monika Peukert and workshops for children, alongside local food and craft displays.
