German regional innovation congresses focus on AI, quantum tech and economic competitiveness

The Innovationsregion Ulm hosted its 2026 Innovation Congress on 2 July at the Orange Campus in Neu‑Ulm. Around 170 decision‑makers from business, science and politics attended to discuss future technologies, including artificial intelligence, intelligent sensor systems for critical infrastructure, AI‑driven medical applications and quantum technologies. Speakers included experts from Fraunhofer IPA, the DLR Quantum Technology Institute and several regional companies, while local officials such as Ulm’s mayors underscored the event’s importance for the region’s economic standing.

In a parallel effort, the erwicon – Thuringia’s long‑standing economic congress – took place in Erfurt in 2026, drawing more than 450 participants from industry, academia and government. The programme examined the future viability of the state’s economy, highlighting emerging trends, megatrends and required political measures. Speakers featured the Thuringian Minister‑President Mario Voigt, Minister of Economy Colette Boos‑John, and academic leaders like Professor Monika Schnitzer. The TV presenter Susann Reichenbach moderated the sessions, emphasizing cross‑sector collaboration and innovation.

Both events illustrate Germany’s regional push to align research breakthroughs with business strategies, aiming to sustain competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global market.
