German Regionalliga reform triggers protests and title race

More than 95% of clubs in Germany's Regionalliga have called for a reform of the promotion system to the 3. Liga, arguing that the current rule—where only four of the five regional champions gain direct promotion—creates injustice. An expert panel's vote at the end of June ended without consensus, prompting clubs to plan a one‑minute ball stoppage in the first minute of the opening match as a protest.

Ahead of the 2026/27 season, football analyst Miroslav Jagatic predicts an “elephant race” among numerous clubs investing heavily to secure the single direct promotion spot. He cites Lok Leipzig, Erzgebirge Aue, Jena, Halle, Altglienicke, Chemnitz, Zwickau, Erfurt and Babelsberg as key contenders, noting that any slip‑up could cost the championship.
