German regions impose water usage bans amid drought

Several districts and independent cities in Thuringia have issued general orders prohibiting the extraction of river or well water for private purposes such as garden irrigation and filling private pools. The bans, applied in areas including the Altenburger Land, Erfurt, Gera, Jena, Suhl, Ilm-Kreis and the districts of Saale‑Holzland, Saale‑Orla, Saalfeld‑Rudolstadt and Sonneberg, aim to safeguard drinking‑water supplies and can be penalised with fines of up to €50,000.

In neighbouring Bavaria, the city of Nuremberg reports that its current water supply remains sufficient and has not introduced comparable restrictions, although the municipal environment office notes unusually high consumption during the recent heat wave. The city contrasts its situation with Munich, where a July decree already bans private pool operation, lawn watering and vehicle washing outside of professional facilities, also carrying fines of up to €50,000. Both regions cite the same national warning from the German environment ministry about increasing water scarcity.
