Germany debates new regulations on postal package limits and police recording rules

Board member Nikola Hagleitner of Deutsche Post AG urged lawmakers to set a legal limit of 23 kg for heavy parcels, citing that the current 31.5 kg threshold contributes to frequent musculoskeletal illnesses among delivery staff. She argued that a statutory rule would protect workers’ health.

Separately, legal scholars and commentators highlighted a German court controversy over the recording of police interrogations. The Federal Court of Justice (BGH) and the Federal Constitutional Court (BVerfG) have been asked to consider whether recordings of officers speaking in their official capacity constitute a private conversation punishable under § 201 StGB. Critics contend that police statements are public by nature and should not be criminalised, pointing to broader concerns about outdated or poorly drafted laws.

Both discussions reflect ongoing debate in Germany about how legislation balances public safety, worker protection, and civil liberties.
