German research links eating disorders with impulse control and IBD
A systematic review and meta‑analysis of 35 studies involving 9,646 individuals with eating disorders found that roughly one in five also suffered from an impulse‑control disorder. Shopping addiction was the most frequent, affecting about 19% of those with eating disorders.
Another meta‑analysis of 23 studies on inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) showed a high prevalence of restrictive and avoidant eating disorders, especially when measured with self‑report questionnaires. The prevalence did not vary significantly by gender, disease subtype, age, or disease activity. Researchers recommend improved early detection and greater clinical attention to these comorbidities.
