German retail closures hit Dortmund's Saturn and Bocholt's Babymarkt

The Saturn electronics store on Dortmund's Westhellweg will close permanently on 31 July, ending a long‑standing presence in the city centre. Local readers expressed concerns about the impact on the downtown shopping area.

In Bocholt, the Babymarkt outlet is also shutting its doors after the lease expires, citing a decline in births, rising online competition and high operating costs as the main drivers. The retailer will continue its operations at other locations.

Both closures reflect broader challenges faced by brick‑and‑mortar retailers in Germany, where shifting consumer habits and cost pressures are prompting store shutdowns.
