German retail gastronomy reaches record 13.3 billion euro revenue

The retail gastronomy sector in Germany is experiencing significant growth, reaching record revenues in 2025. According to a study by the EHI Retail Institute, retailers generated approximately 13.3 billion euros, representing a 7.1 percent increase from the previous year. Since 2019, revenues in this sector have climbed by nearly 33 percent, driven by higher customer frequencies and rising prices.

Common formats include bakeries, cafes, snack stands, and delis located within supermarkets, shopping centers, gas stations, and furniture or hardware stores. The most popular food items sold are meatballs, currywurst, sandwiches, and schnitzel, with lunch being the primary business focus. Most of these offerings are designed for takeaway.

Approximately three-quarters of retailers operate their own catering areas. Notable examples include Ikea, which reported selling 20 million hot dogs in its German locations over the last 12 months, and Rewe, which has introduced self-service warm food counters in 100 branches. The EHI Institute anticipates further revenue growth in 2026.
