German retail sales rise in May 2026 despite forecasts

Germany’s retail sector posted an unexpected increase in May 2026. Seasonal‑adjusted sales grew 1.0 % nominal and 1.1 % real versus April, while year‑on‑year real turnover rose 1.8 % (3.2 % nominal). The boost came partly from strong demand for football World Cup merchandise and a 3.5 % real rise in fuel‑station sales, helped by a government fuel discount introduced in May.

Online and mail‑order trade also posted a solid gain, with a 3.4 % real increase. Economists surveyed by Reuters had predicted flat performance for the month, citing weak consumer confidence. The German Trade Association noted that the early exit of the national football team may dampen future momentum, but the current data suggest a modest lift in consumer spending.
