German retailers see modest World Cup merch demand as consumer watchdog warns of fake jersey shops
In Frankfurt’s city centre, retailers report a mixed picture ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Sales of team jerseys and smaller fan items have risen, but larger items such as televisions have not seen the expected surge. Stores like Sport Scheck, Snipes and Foot Locker note increased interest in national shirts, especially vintage German kits, while electronics chains such as Media Markt and Saturn cite low demand despite tax‑reduction promotions.
At the same time, the Verbraucherzentrale Bremen cautions consumers about online “fakeshops” selling counterfeit football jerseys. As jurist Parsya Baschiri explains, “Bei unseriösen Shops besteht das Risiko, dass gar keine Ware geliefert wird.” Buyers risk non‑delivery, low‑quality materials that may contain harmful substances, and legal issues since importing counterfeit goods is illegal. The watchdog advises shoppers to check for EU firm registration, proper imprint information, and to use payment methods with buyer protection.
