German retailers speed up contactless payments and self‑checkout rollout
Contactless NFC payments have become a standard feature of point‑of‑sale systems in German retail, with merchants requiring NFC‑enabled terminals and secure processes to meet customer expectations for fast, reliable transactions using cards, smartphones or smartwatches.
At the same time, German supermarket chains such as Aldi, Lidl and Edeka are expanding self‑service checkout stations. The move is driven by staff shortages and efficiency pressures, with new technologies—including AI‑enhanced cameras, smart scales, scan‑and‑go apps and improved terminal support—intended to boost customer throughput while preserving a choice between traditional staffed counters and automated options.
