Many German retirees are taking up mini‑jobs to supplement their state pension, attracted by the €538 monthly earnings limit that does not affect pension payments. Popular roles include retail work, office assistance, driving services, caregiving, and light maintenance, allowing flexible hours and continued social contact. The German government actively encourages such part‑time employment as a way to support pensioners financially and keep them engaged.

Retirees who develop a severe disability can also apply for the disability pension even after they have started receiving a regular old‑age pension. The Deutsche Rentenversicherung states that the higher disability pension will be paid, and any overpayments from the regular pension are offset.
