German retirees confront insufficient pensions and payment delays

The average statutory old‑age pension in Germany is about €1,300 net per month for those with at least 35 contribution years, rising to roughly €1,650 for 45‑year contributors as of 31 December 2024. Experts advise that maintaining previous living standards requires roughly 80 % of a former net salary, meaning many pensioners must supplement their income.

A personal case highlights the problem: Jochen, who worked 45 years at Volkswagen, now struggles to cover basic expenses on his pension. In addition to income adequacy, retirees must be aware of payment schedules. The German Pension Service, using Deutsche Post, follows a set timetable for July 2026: pensioners who retired on or before 31 March 2004 receive their payment by 30 June 2026, while those who retired after 1 April 2004 receive it by 31 July 2026. These dates reflect the pre‑ and post‑April 2004 payment regimes.
