German sailor confirmed dead after missing incident near Symi, Greece
A group of eight German vacationers set out on a sailing boat in the southern Aegean Sea on the evening of 2 August. After swimming away from the vessel, the boat drifted unmanned between the islands of Symi and Seskli. Two members reached shore on their own, while the Greek coast guard rescued five others. The eighth sailor remained missing.
On 5 August the Greek coast guard recovered the missing man's body west of Symi and transferred it to Rhodes for autopsy. Greek authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances that caused the boat to break away, and the cause of the accident remains unclear.
