German school athletics teams earn bronze at state competition and win U12 Jochen-Appenrodt Cup
The U14 boys' team from Realschule Plus and Fachoberschule Untermosel secured a bronze medal at the state "Jugend trainiert für Olympia" competition after advancing from the regional round in Mayen to the final in Koblenz. Athletes Luke Busch and Elias Lipinski set personal bests of 1.40 m in high jump, Julius Schmahl ran a personal best 6.82 s for 50 m, and Jawad Shonekel threw a 200 g ball 51 m. Despite a reduced squad of seven due to heat and health issues, the team remained motivated and looked ahead to a possible Berlin appearance next season.
In a separate event, the U12 athletes of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen captured the Jochen‑Appenrodt Cup in Essen on 5 July. The mixed team, composed mainly of 2015‑born athletes, triumphed in the four disciplines—discus, long jump, 6×50 m hurdles relay and 6×800 m chase relay—ending an eight‑year wait since the cup was last brought to Leverkusen in 2018. A second Leverkusen squad of 2016‑born athletes also performed strongly, finishing seventh overall, highlighting the club's strong youth development program.
