German schools implement outdoor forest learning programs
Schools in Germany are implementing innovative outdoor pedagogical concepts that move learning from traditional classrooms into natural environments.
At KGS Lückerath, 198 children participated in the DKidS project, spending seven days in the forest. The program focuses on community building and independent problem-solving, utilizing natural elements like earth, stones, and branches for activities instead of traditional school supplies. Mayor Michael Fingel praised the initiative, noting the forest serves as an ideal playground for children.
Similarly, the Alemannenschule Wutöschingen has developed a 'learning village' concept where the forest, farm, and town hall serve as extensions of the school. A key component of this project is a treehouse camp built over three years using ropes and knots rather than screws. Students participate in week-long forest stays to learn practical skills such as knotting and climbing, while also developing social competencies like responsibility and collective problem-solving.
