German Sculptor Marita Vollborn Shows Anti-War Bronze ARES at Chianciano Biennale 2026

German sculptor, journalist and author Marita Vollborn has been selected as a "Selected Artist" for the 9th Chianciano Biennale, scheduled for 15‑29 August 2026 at the Chianciano Art Museum in Chianciano Terme, Tuscany. She will exhibit her bronze sculpture "ARES" (created in 2015, limited edition of 12, approx. 34 × 29 × 30 cm), which critiques militarism, unchecked violence and the profit‑driven exploitation of wars, noting that more than 80 million deaths in the two world wars have not stopped arms races.

Vollborn has explicitly ruled out showing the work in the United States, stating her principle "Critical Art Comes Before Commerce" and expressing concern that market pressures and a perceived erosion of democratic checks could compromise the piece’s political message. She encourages American visitors to view the sculpture in Italy instead. The Biennale will feature around 300 international artists and offers free admission. Vollborn’s broader project "Sinn und Scherben®" includes about 50 expressive clay and bronze works that explore themes of power, guilt and hope.
