German seaport workers reach wage agreement, averting strikes

The ver.di trade union has accepted a wage proposal from the Central Association of German Seaport Companies (ZDS), averting the threat of indefinite strikes at major German ports.

The 12-month collective agreement covers approximately 11,000 employees across ports including Hamburg, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Emden, Brake, and Wilhelmshaven. Key terms of the deal include a 3.4 percent increase in hourly wages, retroactive to August 1, 2026, and a 200 euro increase in holiday pay starting in 2027. Additionally, workers in high-turnover container operations will receive an extra 416 euro annual allowance beginning January 1, 2027.

The decision follows several rounds of intense negotiations and warning strikes. While the union has approved the offer, final formal completion is pending approval from the employer side.
